LWG opens door to first Chinese car brand
Non-profit organisation the Leather Working Group (LWG) has welcomed Beijing-headquartered Li Auto into its fold, marking the first time LWG membership has been extended to a Chinese car brand.

The company, which specialises in new energy vehicles (NEVs) for its local market, delivered more than 90,000 cars to China-based customers last year. In its home country, NEVs can range from battery-powered electric cars to plug-in electric-gasoline hybrids and fuel cell electric vehicles.

The brand said that it had been determined to join the LWG, as a testament to its own responsible sourcing and sustainable leather commitments. “Li Auto will actively participate in promoting industrial traceability and developing more environmentally friendly products based on the LWG platform,” a spokesperson elaborated.

Head of the multi-stakeholder body, Christina Trautmann, suggested that Li Auto’s LWG membership signified a growing trend on the part of automotive original equipment manufacturers to make concrete sourcing commitments when it comes to responsibly produced leather.
