Non-pickling patent issued to Wuji firm

Local media have reported that the China National Intellectual Property Administration recently issued a patent to Wuji Jingsen Leather Product Company, based in Hebei province, for a tanning process which does not involve pickling.

Supported in research and development by a senior technical consultant at Hebei Leather Industry Association, the non-pickling method can significantly decrease the levels of salt added to cowhide, for example, according to reports, as well as reduce the cost of processing hides by roughly $315 for every 22 tonnes of hide.

Post-tanning wastewater treatment and recycling is also made much easier by the technique, furthermore, since the wastewater does not contain chloride ions. As a result, the resource could even be reused for garden irrigation, Chinese media said.

Local administrators across Wuji county are reportedly now asking local tanneries to apply and promote the large-scale use of the new technology, in order to “trigger a new technological revolution and quality innovation in the tanning field”.
