IULTCS names grant winners

The International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies (IULTCS) has announced the winners of its Young Leather Scientist grants for 2022.

These awards are open to scientists under the age of 35 who work in the leather industry in any part of the world. Winners receive monetary awards to help support their work.
Fitsum Etefa Ahmed from the Ethiopian Institute of Textile and Fashion Technology is the winner of this year’s research grant for a project entitled ‘The anti-ectoparasitic activity of medicinal plant extracts in reducing cockle damage on sheep and goat skin’. The grant is for €1,500.

In parallel, Louret Atsenga Andalo, from Dedan Kimathi University of Technology in Kenya, has won the sustainability grant, provided by the Leather Naturally campaign in honour of Dr Mike Redwood. This grant is for €1,000 and is for a project entitled ‘Extraction of natural dye from beetroot peel and application in leather dyeing using bio-mordant’.

Co-general manager leather research body FILK, Dr Michael Meyer, chaired the selection committee. He commented: “We look forward to seeing the research outcomes of the projects we are supporting and wish from Fitsum and Louret every success as they contribute to expanding our industry knowledge.”
