Leather central to Timberland family’s new ‘biocircular’ boot brand
A new footwear brand, launched by the grandson and great-grandson of the Timberland founder, has created a collection of hiking boots it calls biocircular, with the upper made from reverse, full-grain leather.

Erem will use only using only circular or recyclable materials and incentivise customers to extend the life of their boots through the Erem Reboot repair programme.

Co-founder Jeff Swartz was the CEO of Timberland before selling the business in 2011 to VF Corp. His son Noah Swartz wanted to create a boot made with exacting environmental standards.

Jeff Swartz said: "My grandfather, Nathan, taught me responsibility and modelled resilience and courage. My dad, Sidney, taught me how to dream and what determination is. But it's my son Noah who is teaching me how to stretch imagination and deliver on our ideals. It took four generations, but we are getting somewhere with the launch of Erem.”

The boots, designed for the desert, also include Tencel lyocell canvas lining and a cork insole. The one-piece outsole is made of 70% recycled rubber and is stitched to the upper using linen thread.

Erem will also use proceeds of sales to plant prickly pear cacti in the US Sonoran Desert. They are fast-growing, water-efficient plants with the potential to capture carbon dioxide, produce of fruit, and restore dehydrated rivers.
