Market Intelligence: world situation makes European leather competitive

The latest edition of our exclusive Leatherbiz Market Intelligence newsletter went live on August 31.

In this issue, the market insight report claims that problems with transportation and logistics and a resurgence of covid-19 in many parts of the world have caused an important change in the market.

Finished product manufacturers are becoming increasingly willing to source in Europe rather than Asia because the price differences have narrowed. In addition, some companies now consider that it’s worth paying slightly more to source in Europe because they can have greater confidence that the goods will arrive on time.

Increasingly, buyers placing orders in Asia are experiencing delays and disruption, making it hard for them to present new collections in good time and have product in place for consumers to buy.

“The significant increase in the cost of transport and the sharp rise in the overall cost of production in China have made many manufacturing sectors in Europe much more competitive,” the report says. “Leather production is certainly one of them.”
