India’s Council for Leather Exports (CLE) has elected Sanjay Leekha as its new chairman. Mr Leekha is the managing director of Alpine Apparel, based in Haryana state.

He said on being elected that covid-19 had led to a decline in exports of 27.7% but that India’s leather exports were now “back on the growth track”.

He pointed out that figures for the first two months of the 2021-2022 financial year, April and May, showed exports of more than $640 million, more than three times higher than the figures for the same months in 2020.

“This is the perfect beginning for us,” the new CLE chairman said. “We hope to sustain it in the coming months.”
