Lockdown provides boost for handmade leathergoods company

The family run company, which launched in 2008, attributes the interest to people paying more attention to their pets.
Co-owner Dawn Trevor told the Teeside Mercury: “During the lockdown, it seemed like people had a lot more money, maybe because they weren’t travelling or going out. We have been inundated with orders for dog collars and leads, perhaps because people were spending more time with their pets.”
The company says it reflects the traditions of the English Master Saddler and the quality and craftsmanship exhibited in Victorian and Edwardian period. The leathers are sourced from “the world’s best tanneries” and the belts, wallets, watch straps and other accessories are made by hand.
It said: “We prioritise good over fast. This flies in the face of the Amazons of this world but is the core of what we do. It also means we develop products slowly - you won’t see new Equus products often. It can take years of development effort to get a design to the point it is good enough to launch.”
In 2015, Equus won the Made in Britain award at the Heritage Craft Awards.
