Kenya: politician calls for big changes to KLDC
A Kenyan politician and leather entrepreneur, Joseph Manje, has presented a formal petition in parliament asking for an overhaul of the Kenya Leather Development Council (KLDC).
Mr Manje told Kenya’s national assembly that the KLDC leadership team had focused more on improvement programmes for hides and skins than on promoting the country’s leather and leather products. He said this had led to tannery closures and to a steep decline in export revenues.
Among the changes he called for, he said overall responsibility for the KLDC should come under the department for industrialisation rather than the department for livestock.
