Tannery-produced alternative won’t replace leather, Gucci says
Luxury brand Gucci has introduced a new material called Demetra, which is produced in tanneries, but not from hides or skins.
It is 77% veg-based, using cellulosic fibres from sustainably managed forests and bio-based polyurethane from renewable sources. The rest of Demetra comes from non-renewable chemical compounds, which Gucci says it hopes to replace in future.
Italian leather industry news resource La Conceria has identified Gruppo Colonna, which is 51% owned by Gucci, as the leather manufacturing group that is making Demetra.
It said Gucci had assured it that it did not view Demetra as a replacement for leather.
