Burberry takes its Olympia on world tour
British luxury goods brand Burberry has launched a series of “World of Olympia” pop-ups in international destinations, designed to celebrate the inspiration and craftsmanship behind its Olympia handbag.
Offering exclusive colourways and small sizes of the bag, the pop-ups will initially be hosted within London’s Harrods, Galaxy Macau, New York’s Bergdorf Goodman and Nanjing Deji Plaza department stores.
From late May, the concept will also travel to Guangzhou Taikoo Hui, Shenyang MixC, Shinsegae Centum (in Busan, South Korea), Hong Kong Landmark and Tokyo’s Isetan Shinjuku.
Inspired by ancient Greek architecture, the sweeping curves of the pop-up installations’ interiors are reminiscent of the crescent silhouette of the Olympia bag itself, made from Italian leather.
Designed by chief creative officer at Burberry, Riccardo Tisci, the initial inspiration for the bag was the distinctive architecture which housed the brand’s autumn-winter 2020 fashion show in London, held at West Kensington’s Olympia (known for its crescent-shaped roof).
“When designing the Olympia, I was thinking about creating the perfect form of a handbag, something that could capture the essence of femininity,” Mr Tisci commented.
