Breakthrough for Spoor as Oeko-Tex makes traceability move
Certification body Oeko-Tex has said it will work with Danish company Spoor to increase the transparency component of its standards and labelling for leather.
Spoor, a spin-off from Danish wet blue and wet white producer Scan-Hide, uses a laser-technology based system for marking and identifying hides. Its system allows it and brands who use leather made from its hides to provide access to the whole life-story of the animals the raw material comes from.
Oeko-Tex said it had set up an alliance with Spoor because it wanted to add a greater transparency component to its standards and labels.
Commenting on the development, Oeko-Tex general secretary, Georg Dieners, said: “We know sustainability and transparency are the future. Lifting the traceability bar in the leather industry is a huge step forward.”
For his part, the chief executive of Scan-Hide, Michael Søndergaard, said: “With inspiration from the food industry, where transparency and traceability are basic requirements, we realised we could help add a whole new dimension that no other player in the leather industry is currently able to offer on an industrial scale.”
