Leather Leaders: series continues with Federico Brugnoli

In the latest issue of World Leather, now published in print and on leatherbiz, the Leather Leaders series continues with an interview with entrepreneur and sustainability consultant Federico Brugnoli.

You can read the interview now in the Q&A section of the website. We will also publish an audio version of the conversation in the World Leather Podcast series in the coming days.

Mr Brugnoli’s work in helping the leather industry understand and carry out lifecycle assessment (LCA) played an important part in securing approval from the European Commission for leather’s product environmental footprint category rules and recognition of leather’s status as an environmentally friendly product.

Now, however, he says he would like to see the leather industry move away from LCA. It’s becoming increasingly clear that the many different approaches to LCA, different methodologies and the different datasets make it harder than ever to present a like-for-like comparison between different manufacturers or different materials.

Instead, it should adopt “lifecycle thinking”, he says, and design sustainability in from the start. Read the interview to see what he means by this.
