BMW chairman values circularity

The chairman of BMW has said circularity is one of the top five issues for the car group, as part of a speech outlining its direction at a media day.

Oliver Zipse said the future of our planet demands circularity as every year, we use more than 100 billion tonnes of raw materials.

He said: “We must turn the narrative around – from a taken-for-granted, unquestioned use of primary materials to the primacy of secondary materials. Let's reduce our dependencies! Every time we think about using raw materials, we should ask: How much do we need and what do we want to use it for? Are there better options?”

This statement appears to go against the recent decision to phase out leather from its Mini brand, which Secretary to the International Council of Tanners Dr Kerry Senior called “deeply disappointing” as leather is the “original circular material”.

At least half BMW's models will be fully electric by 2030.

He also reiterated the previously stated goal of reducing carbon dioxide emissions across vehicles' life cycles: supply chain, production and use. “We will now reduce CO2 emissions per vehicle by another 80 percent by 2030.”

He added that the group was optimistic about the next financial year, with sales figures for January and February mirroring the trend at the end of fourth quarter of 2020, with double-digit growth rates.
