Tanners and fertiliser company claim project success in Igualada
An Igualada-based fertiliser manufacturer, Labin, has successfully completed a project to use waste from some of the nearby tanneries of the Barcelona Leather Cluster as raw material for products it will present to the agri-food sector as organic fertiliser.
A local business organisation, the Business Union of Anoia, and the Catalan government’s waste management agency supported the project and helped fund trials and environmental analyses of the products.
Work began on the project in 2019, focusing on using hair from hair-saving operations in tanneries as a source of nitrogen for fertiliser.
Labin and the Barcelona Leather Cluster are both members of a circular economy network that the Business Union of Anoia has set up. They are already working on new circular economy projects together.
