World Leather Podcast: new episode with Luis Zugno goes live
The audio version of the latest in our Leather Leaders interview series is now live as a new episode of the World Leather Podcast.
Here, Dr Luis Zugno, president of IULTCS, talks to World Leather about his 45 years in the industry, his reflections on a turbulent first year at the head of the leather chemists’ and technologists’ body and his hopes for the 2021 and beyond.
Asked about areas in which he would like to see innovation in the future, Dr Zugno delivers a detailed list of ideas that, taken together, constitute a real programme for change that leather manufacturers and their chemicals and technology suppliers can, and must, address together.
He says: “We have to redesign the process chemically and mechanically to use less water and chemicals and reduce waste. Our challenge is to tan collagen just enough to make a useable product, one that is biodegradable and non-toxic. Today, we maybe overdo the tannage and make leather that is too good when it doesn’t need to be so good.”
