Volkswagen China announces tree-planting programme

Volkswagen China has announced that it will plant 8.5 million trees in 10 “ecologically fragile” parts of China. The tree-planting programme will start next year and will run for a decade.

Speaking at the third China International Import Expo in Shanghai on November 5, the chief executive of Volkswagen China, Stephan Wöllenstein, said the group is contributing to a low-carbon future by expanding its electric vehicle portfolio and by working with suppliers to achieve a lower carbon footprint of raw materials.

He said the group would offset carbon emissions that it could not avoid and that the tree-planting programme was part of it. Mr Wöllenstein said the automotive group had identified ten locations in different parts of China where the new trees will go in an attempt to reduce or reverse the effects of soil erosion, desertification and biodiversity loss.
