Chanel takes a stake in a second Italian tannery
Italian media have quoted luxury brand Chanel as saying it is in the process of taking a controlling interest in another tannery, Conceria Gaiera.
This would be Chanel’s fifth investment in its leather supply chain in recent years, following its purchase of a 100% stake in specialist Catalan double-face producer Colomer in 2018, its acquisition of two French small skins tanneries, Bodin Joyeux in 2013 and Mégisserie Richard in 2016, and its purchase of a controlling stake in Tuscan tanner Conceria Samanta last year.
Conceria Gaiera is based near Milan and specialises in making leather from lamb, goat and calfskins. It has been a supplier to Chanel for more than ten years.
Chanel told Italian fashion media that it was investing in the leather manufacturer to secure a lasting relationship between the two. It said Gaiera would continue to supply other customers too.
