MLA: Global beef demand will fall only 1% in 2020

22/07/2020
A drop in processing speeds and temporary plant closures due to covid-19 means global beef production is now forecast to decline 1% in 2020, according to industry association Meat and Livestock Australia.

In the US, cattle slaughter is now above last year’s levels but  processors are facing a large backlog of overfed cattle still on feed and on pasture.

Cattle slaughter in New Zealand has improved and outlook for the rest of 2019-20 season is positive, with strong international demand for red meat led by China, said MLA.

In Brazil, red meat processing is 11% lower for or the calendar year-to-May, and given a weak domestic market and soft value of the Real, Brazil is depending on exports to sustain its meat industry.

Indian slaughterhouses have experienced heavy disruptions, with livestock movements stopping. India has leaned on exporting frozen buffalo meat primarily pulled from cold stores.
