Leather Pipeline: less leather in car interiors in 2020
26/11/2019
One sobering message contained in the report this time is that the automotive leather sector must be prepared for a decline in leather consumption in car interiors, in spite of car sales stabilising and, in some markets, even showing recent signs of growth.
Much of the recent increase in car sales centres on the push, especially in Europe and China, to swap older cars for new, electric-powered vehicles. This, the report says, is likely to continue in 2020.
It’s not that leather interiors work less well in electric cars. Some changes in car use, such as greater sharing of vehicles, could even make leather interiors more appropriate and more popular as they would prove more long-lasting.
According to leather pipeline, a fall in the use of leather in car interiors in 2020, and a possible consolidation in the automotive leather sector, owes more to a desire among car companies to save money.
