The director of the centre for food and agricultural business at Purdue University, Professor Allan Gray, has told members of the US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) that they should not seek to limit market access for non-meat alternative proteins.

Speaking at USMEF’s strategic planning conference in Tucson on November 8, Professor Gray said USMEF members should compete for consumers by helping people understand why meat is the best protein choice.

“We all like choices, so the urge to take away alternative proteins as a choice may not be the best strategy,” he said. “What we should be saying is, ‘you have choices, but our product is the best choice and here is why.’”

At the conference, USMEF elected Cevin Jones, a cattle feeder from Idaho, as its new chair.
