Australia has its eye on Peru’s beef market

04/11/2019
A report prepared by the Australian government and by red meat promotions body Meat and Livestock Australia has concluded that there will be good opportunities in the immediate future  for an increase in beef exports to Peru.

In 2018, imports accounted for only 2% of beef consumption in Peru, the report found, and Brazil, Bolivia and the US had a combined share of more than 80% of those imports. However, it also found that consumption of high-quality meat is likely to go up in Peru as the population and the economy grow.

It said that imported beef is likely to increase in volume by 82% in 2019. By 2023, demand will be 135% of the 2019 figure.

Most higher-quality beef comes into Peru at the moment from the US, Uruguay and Argentina, according to the report.

It concluded that Australia will have the chance to gain a share of the Peruvian beef market thanks to both countries being signatories to the Comprehensive and Progressive TransPacific Partnership(CPTPP) agreement and a bilateral free trade agreement. These agreements will lead to the elimination of tariffs.
