Special label for Basque tannery

A tannery in south-west France, Remy Carriat, has secured inclusion in a programme called Entreprises du Patrimoine Vivant (EPV), a label set up by the French government to recognise companies “for the excellence of their traditional and industrial know-how”. The name means ‘Living Heritage Companies’.

Tannerie Remy Carriat operates in Espelette in the Basque Country. It was founded in 1927 and is still family-run.

On receiving the news the government had granted it the EPV label, the company said it was proud to have won recognition for the work of its craftspeople and for the quality of its leather.
