A tannery in the eastern Italian province of Macerata, JH Conceria del Chienti, has begun a project to look into methods for making metal-free leather with researchers from the nearby university of Camerino.

As part of the agreement, the university has set up a dedicated research unit inside the tannery.

JH Conceria del Chienti chief executive, Marco Luppa, said on announcing the project that his hope is  to help develop a new generation of tanning sector experts.

The tannery is one of Italy’s oldest and has been in operation for 95 years. In 2014, it was acquired by Chinese industrial group Jihua.
