Partners to hold follow-up event on hide traceability
16/10/2019
As part of a wider European Union-sponsored social and environmental report on the European leather industry that COTANCE is preparing with trade union organisation IndustriAll Europe for 2020, the partners held an initial raw materials workshop at Lineapelle on October 2.
The event brought together delegates from the US Hides, Skins & Leather Association, Brazil’s CICB, national organisations and individual companies from Italy, Austria, Germany, France, the UK and Denmark. COTANCE said the intention was “to kickstart a constructive dialogue” on “key concerns” such as animal welfare, deforestation, traceability, quality improvement, authenticity and environmental allocation.
A consensus emerged that standards for traceability back to the slaughterhouse should be in place by 2025, and for traceability back to an individual animal by 2030.
The February follow-up event will monitor progress on these ideas.
