Scottish Leather Group to create 100 jobs at new cutting plant
Leather manufacturer the Scottish Leather Group (SLG) has confirmed that it will create 100 new jobs in Paisley. The group already runs a wet-end tannery in Paisley, as well as a second wet-end tannery and a separate finishing plant at nearby Bridge of Weir (the group also runs a tannery in the east end of Glasgow). With an existing workforce of more than 800, SLG is already one of the largest leather manufacturing groups in Europe.

These additional jobs will be at a dedicated cutting plant, which the group will build at a new site in Paisley. At this new site, it will cut and package automotive leather upholstery sets for its clients in the car industry. It aims to have the facility up and running by the autumn of 2020.

The announcement came on September 20 as part of news of a wider economic growth plans for this part of Scotland, Renfrewshire. Renfrewshire Council described the new leather cutting plant as the first step in its plan to create 9,000 new jobs in the local economy in the coming years. An economic leadership panel has driven the development of the economic growth strategy.

SLG director James Lang chairs the economic leadership panel and, in a bid to lead from the front, decided to reveal the leather cutting plant plans as part of Renfrewshire’s wider growth announcement.

Minister for finance, economy and fair work in the Scottish government, Derek Mackay, welcomed the new jobs and said: “Scotland is an attractive place to do business with a skilled workforce; companies like Scottish Leather Group expanding their operations is testament to this.”
