Minister revives new leather cluster plan in Ethiopia
13/09/2019
An original plan from 2014 failed to come to fruition, but local media reported in early September that Mr Gebreyesus had decided to proceed and that the state company that builds and runs industrial parks in Ethiopia had completed the purchase of 290 hectares of land on which the leather cluster will be built.
Mr Gebreyesus led the country’s delegation at the XXXV IULTCS Congress in Dresden in June.
In total, 11 companies will set up production facilities at the new site, including manufacturers of semi-finished and finished leather and makers of finished products. It will have its own wastewater treatment plant and a training centre, as well as a bank and a post office.
The project will cost between €60 million and €80 million. The European Union will provide 50% of the funding.
