First African winner of LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers

The ?nal of the sixth edition of LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers took place in Paris on September 4, with South African designer Thebe Magugu taking the top prize. He will receive a €300,000 grant and will spend a year on a mentoring programme with a dedicated LVMH team.

The panel of judges was made up of the artistic directors of five LVMH brands: Kris Van Assche from Berluti, Maria Grazia Chiuri from Dior, Nicolas Ghesquière from Louis Vuitton and Clare Waight Keller from Givenchy, as well as other senior executives from the group.

They gave another award, called the Karl Lagerfeld Prize in tribute to the designer, who died in February 2019 and had played a role in the LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers since its launch, to Israeli designer, Hed Mayner. He wins €150,000 and enjoy a one-year mentorship programme.

In comments at the final, Delphine Arnault, vice president of Louis Vuitton, said: “I am delighted that, for the ?rst time, an African candidate has won the prize, all the more so since Thebe Magugu, aged 26, is the youngest designer of the 2019 selection.”
