Skyeskyns turns to veg tanning
Skyeskyns, the last remaining sheepskin tannery in Scotland, has switched its tanning methods to veg tanning to improve its environmental credentials.

The switch to this more traditional method of tanning is just one phase in their plans for further eco-friendly initiatives, with everything produced in the tanning stages to be composted and spread back into the Skyeskyns croft with the support of a series of reedbeds.

We spoke to the company for the June/July issue of World Leather, when Isabelle Florin told us of the move: “It’s been talked about for years and we are finally taking the plunge. This would give us the option of expanding production should we wish to.”

She added: “We want to be the best we can be and honour the beautiful place we live in.”
