Leather Pipeline: Holy grail of blemish-free leather has become a burden
Tanners, machinery manufacturers and chemical companies might have inadvertently created problems by 'teaching' consumers that natural marks on hides are bad, says the author of the Leather Pipeline report.

He suggests that the strive for material that is blemish free has led brands to seek material with no ‘defects’ but if that’s a requisite, plastic-based material will always produce a more even - and cheaper - result.

“We see leather with finishing that people could only dream of 10 years ago and which would have been considered the end of tanners’ problems,” he says. “But the number of people buying leather over plastic has unfortunately shrunk and in the global price war, leather with any kind of finishing has lost.”

With many tanners on their summer break, the market has been quiet, but it will soon wake up as hides sellers begin their tours before the autumn shows and when brands and retailers place orders for next season.
