Tyson fire will have impact on hide market

Industry commentators have pointed out that the loss of Tyson’s packing plant at Holcomb, Finney County, Kansas, following a fire on August 9 will make a potentially important impact on the supply of hides.

Tyson has promised to rebuild the plant and has said all full-time employees at the site will continue to be paid. Nevertheless, the effects of the fire mean the rebuild is likely to take considerable time.

The plant is big, with the capacity to process around 30,000 hides per week. Other packer plants will be able to pick up some of the slack, but observers say Tyson and other packer companies are likely to take a cautious approach at first, taking time to assess the impact the incident could have on the market.
