A downturn in demand for Turkish leather in the domestic market and in traditional export markets such as Russia has not proved to be bad news for all of Turkey’s tanners.

Some have discovered that their leather is of a high enough quality to meet the requirements of some of the biggest names in the luxury sector.

In recent comments, Eyup Sevimli, owner of Sevimli Deri, a tanner in the Izmir-Menemen cluster, said he had been able to achieve revenues of €6 million so far from sales of its kid and goat leather to brands include Bottega Veneta, Berluti and Balenciaga.

“We hope to increase these revenues and, to help do that, we will soon set up a new joint venture with an Italian partner,” he said.
