Leather Pipeline: Automotive no longer a safe haven for leather
23/07/2019
With leather having lost a considerable amount of its share of the footwear market, the automotive sector is seen by many as the last safe haven for the material.
However, the report, which can be read in full here, brings worrying news. It points to data that shows that car sales and production are down by single-digit figures.
“The decline in leather consumption in the leather industry is far bigger than the decline in production,” it continues, going on to express doubts over “unconvincing promises” that demand for automotive leather will recover.
“The penetration of leather in the car interior is declining and less leather is being used per vehicle,” it says, explaining that there are also fewer leather interiors in volume models.
Among the reasons it suggests for this decline is that vehicle manufacturers are being attracted by the production benefits that leather alternatives bring. It adds that the average customer is no longer interested in whether there is leather in their vehicle, preferring instead to focus on “electronic gadgets”.
