Tannery’s technical director retires after almost 50 years in the industry

The technical director of Law Tanning, Richard Ellis, retired on July 22 after almost 50 years in the leather industry.

Mr Ellis began his leather career in Johnstown, New York. During the 1990s, he joined United States Leather where he was a technician working in the company’s automotive upholstery leathers operation.

For the last 22 years, he has worked in Milwaukee, first at  Seidel Tanning and then at Law. Paying tribute to his technical director, company president, Ryan Law, said: “Dick has brought Law Tanning's control of formulations into the twenty-first century. He has changed our quality control processes for the better in a very short period of time. The positive effects of his work here will leave a mark for many years to come.”
 
Mr Ellis said he was looking forward to spending time with friends and family but was also open to the idea of carrying out some consulting work.

Law Tanning describes itself as the most diverse leather producer in North America, tanning cowhide (grain and splits), genuine American bison, pig, deer, elk and kangaroo. It produces crust and finished leather for a range of industries including footwear, fashion accessories, sporting goods, gloves and small leathergoods.
