London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, commonly referred to as the V&A, is to host an exhibition dedicated to the style, function, design and craftsmanship of bags.

The exhibition, entitled ‘Bags!’, will run from 25 April 2020 to 3 January 2021. Tickets will go on sale later this year.

It will showcase more than 300 objects, dating back as far as the 16th century. As well as luxury handbags designs from brands like Louis Vuitton and Hermès, there will also be examples of larger trunks and of items such as backpacks.

The museum has said the exhibition will examine how bags have been used throughout history. The aim is to “highlight the nature of the bag as an object for both display and concealment, adornment and utility”.
