Tom Schneider addresses Guangzhou footwear conference

The 38th International Footwear Conference co-organized by the China Leather Industry Association (CLIA) and the Association of Guangdong Shoes Manufacturers (AGSM) took place in Guangzhou at the end of May.

Founder and executive chairman of leather manufacturing group ISA TanTec, Thomas Schneider, was a guest speaker at the conference and he used his presentation to show that leather is a sustainable and eco-friendly product.

He said: “The tanning industry absorbs the by-product of the dairy and meat industry. Hides will be disposed of in landfill if they are not processed in tanneries and turned into leather.”

He went on to give examples of how ISA TanTec goes to great length to use as much of each hide as possible, with excess material from one division often proving useful to another. He said, for example, that excess material from its Auburn Lace division, which makes leather shoelaces, goes into trims and patches at its TrimTec division.
