It warned the disease goes far beyond animal health and welfare, it could cause “severe economic losses and threatens food security”.
The Chinese government has estimated its hog inventory is down 20% and this has knock-on effects throughout the supply chain.
“ASF led to a huge amount of pork being imported into China from other regions,” said World Leather’s industry commentator. “Pork prices are booming. Since China consumes the entire animal, the balance of meat and by-products in many countries has also been affected. It does not appear that the culling of animals in China will stop any time soon.”
At the 87th OIE General Session in Paris this week, the World Assembly called on countries to consider ASF control as a high priority and the OIE committed to implement a global initiative to better support them in the control of the disease.
