Pigskin is part of Philippines fever furore

Agriculture minister, Emmanuel Piñol, issued a memorandum at the end of January asking importers to bring no products derived from pigs, including leather, into the Philippines if the country of origin has been affected by ASF.
Local media reported that this request included, implausibly, bovine leather and Mr Piñol had to take to social media to deny this; pigskin is the only leather implicated.
He said the country’s Bureau of Animal Industry will conduct a formal risk assessment of the possibility of ASF coming into the Philippines through leather products and added that the bureau will send an inspection team to China to visit pigskin tanneries there.
The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) has said African swine fever has, since 2007 been detected in multiple countries across Africa, Asia and Europe, in both domestic and wild pigs.
