EU cattle population dips to 87.5 million head

Among member states, France had, by far, the largest number of cattle with 18.5 million head, down by 2.1% year on year, followed by Germany with 11.9 million head, a decrease of 2.8%. The United Kingdom was next with a cattle population of just under 9.7 million head, followed by Ireland with just under 6.6 million, Spain with 6.5 million, Italy with 6.3 million and Poland with 6.1 million.
The UK, Ireland and Italy had declines of 1.1%, 1.1% and 0.6% respectively. In contrast, the cattle populations of Spain and Poland increased in 2018 compared to 2017 by 0.8% and 2.5% respectively.
Provisional figures for Turkey, which is not an EU member, indicate a cattle population of 17.2 million head in 2018, an increase compared to the previous year of nearly 7%.
