Brazilian footwear industry on track despite March export dip

10/04/2019
The latest data released by Brazilian footwear industry body Abicalçados shows that the country’s shoe exports dropped 7.7% in volume and 9.4% in value in March.

During the month, nine million pairs of shoes were exported for a total value of $83.9 million, both significant declines compared to the figures for March 2018.

The executive president of Abicalçados, Heitor Klein, blamed these declines on poor sales to Argentina in March. Last month, exports to this market fell 50% in value and 34.9% in volume year-on-year.

Despite the disappointing performance in March, Brazil’s footwear exports in the first three months of 2019 were higher than in the same period of last year. A total of 35 million pairs of shoes were exported during the period from January to March for a total value of $267.1 million, respective increases of 14.9% and 6.4%.
