Japanese heritage in new Lexus SUV
Automotive original equipment manufacturer (OEM) Lexus has said Japanese traditions inspired its designers in the creation of its new UX SUV, including in the appearance of the dashboard trims and stitching in the leather upholstery.

Traditions it has tapped into for the vehicle’s interior include a Japanese architectural concept called engawa, which chief designer, Tetsuo Miki, has said bridges the boundary between the inside and the outside.

With regard to the stitching in the leather, the tradition Lexus has called upon here is called sashiko. This is a traditional Japanese quilting technique that dates back more than 1,200 years. Its strength, with four stitches per centimetre, has long made it popular in the making of judo and kendo martial arts uniforms, and protective cotton coats worn by early Japanese fire fighters.

Lexus craftspeople have now applied it to the leather in the UX, which, in addition, is decorated with new perforation patterns that form mathematical curves and gradations, the OEM has said.
