Nissan reverses decision to build new model in the UK

In 2016, the company said it would build the new SUV at its Sunderland factory in the north of England. It employs around 7,000 people at this facility.
Nissan has now said it intends to “consolidate” production of the X-Trail at its plant in Kyushu, Japan’s third largest island. The company had admitted the UK’s impending exit from the European Union (‘Brexit’) was a factor in the decision.
“While we have taken this decision for business reasons, the continued uncertainty around the UK’s future relationship with the EU is not helping companies like ours to plan for the future,” said Nissan Europe chairman Gianluca de Ficchy.
