Four tanners and one chemical company join Leather Naturally
25/01/2019
The five companies are tanners Siddiq Shafi Group from Pakistan, BLeather from the Dominican Republic, Curtidos Treviño from Mexico and Hermann Oak Leather from the US, and leather chemicals manufacturer Pulcra Chemicals.
Pulcra’s research and development manager, Dr Ivo Reetz, said the company believes in the future of leather, calling it “a traditional material that can fit perfectly with contemporary requirements for sustainability”.
For his part, Siddiq Shafi Group chairman, Muhammad Musaddiq, said he hoped Leather Naturally would be able to spread the message that tanners “are doing a big service to the world by converting raw hides and skins into a valuable material”. But for tanners, meat companies would face what he called the “hazardous task” of getting rid of this by-product.
The general manager of Hermann Oak Leather, Tom Eberle, commented that the company sees value in sharing the story of leather and said joining Leather Naturally would help bring that story to the attention of mainstream media and the public.
Leather Naturally has developed a proposal for a global digital communications campaign to promote leather. It has said efforts to fund this programme have attracted a good response from the industry and that it hopes to launch the campaign soon.
