Footwear the only bright spot for Bangladesh leather sector

During the first five months of the current financial year, (July-November 2018), the Bangladesh leather industry registered a decline in export revenues of 16.1% compared to the same months a year earlier, falling to $434.7 million.

There was positive news from the leather footwear sector, which increased its export revenues over the period by 4.5%, reaching $264.3 million. However, the contributions of finished leather and of leathergoods fell, by 5.4% and more than 40% respectively.

Finished leather exports brought in $76.2 million, while shipments of leathergoods earned export revenues for Bangladesh of $94.2 million over the five-month period.

The government has set the Bangladesh leather industry a target of increasing export revenues by 3.5% during this financial year, to reach more than $1.1 billion in total.
