Leather-ban CEO attends COTANCE meeting

Following widely circulated news that Helsinki Fashion Week had announced a ban on leather at its 2019 event, the leather industry’s representative body in the European Union, COTANCE, held out an olive branch.

It invited the chief executive of Helsinki Fashion Week, Evelyn Mora, to attend the COTANCE autumn council in Naples in October. Ms Mora, herself a fashion designer, accepted.

During her time in Naples, she listened to presentations from COTANCE and visited the Russo di Casandrino tannery, run by the current president of Italian tanning industry association UNIC, Gianni Russo.

COTANCE general secretary, Gustavo Gonzalez-Quijano, said afterwards that the meeting had been “undoubtedly positive”. Ms Mora had explained her reasons for taking the decision. She said many younger people in the fashion industry regard leather as cruel. Mr Gonzalez-Quijano was able to explain to and show her that tanners only use waste from the meat industry that might, otherwise, have to go into landfill. He was also able to point out that the sustainability of many alternative materials is also worth examining carefully.

He said the decision for 2019 is unlikely to change, but said he hoped Helsinki Fashion Week might reintroduce leather for 2020.
