The new issue of World Leather is now available
The October/November 2018 issue of World Leather is now available online. The full e-zine can be accessed here.

This issue features our third and final special supplement section of the year. This time, the focus is on the footwear industry. It includes a closer look at the potential ramifications for those in the shoe industry of the ongoing trade war between the US and China, which has seen a large number of imports and exports subject to tariffs. There is also extensive coverage of the debate that is currently raging in the industry about whether footwear brands are ever going to come back to leather.

There is news of a new shoemaking apprenticeship programme in the UK and information about a new collaboration between footwear brand Norman Walsh and car maker Lexus that has leather at its core. We also get inside the mind of a master bootmaker at luxury shoe brand Berluti.

Our technical section includes an article examining how chemicals supplier Lanxess is helping automotive tanners overcome the difficulties arising from new legislation in China related to emissions in car interiors. We also explain how footwear group Ecco’s new tanning technology helps achieve considerable savings in chemicals, sludge and water, and Gemata explains why its Starsplit splitting machine is proving especially attractive to shoe companies.

Our special technical theme for this issue is end-of-life recycling. In this section, we highlight a number of start-ups with big ideas about how to extend the life of leather and leather products.

In keeping with our footwear theme, the Beast to Beauty feature is dedicated to UK goat leather manufacturer Billy Tannery, which recently launched its first footwear product, a sneaker made from vegetable-tanned kid leather.
