PrimeAsia sourcing supports cattle sustainability programme

Leather manufacturing group PrimeAsia has demonstrated its support for animal welfare by sourcing some of its wet blue hides from a cattle sustainability programme backed by packer and tanning group Tyson.

“PrimeAsia has long prided itself on sourcing from like-minded suppliers who value transparency and best-in-class animal welfare practices,” the group said on making the announcement.

Tyson says the progamme, Progressive Beef, is the largest cattle sustainability programme that includes verification by external auditors that are approved by the US department of agriculture. It is a quality management system focusing on cattle management and on sustainable cattle feed. In August, Tyson became the first packer group to licence Progressive Beef.

Feedyards certified in the programme are audited twice per year for cattle care and wellbeing, food safety and environmental sustainability. The feedyard then receives a report card from auditors with suggestions for improvement in all three areas. Measurements include cattle handling and daily care, pen conditions, water tank cleanliness, feed nutrition, antibiotic use, employee safety and so on.
