Bangladesh: leather-sector exports decline in value

During first three months of the current financial year, (July-September 2018), Bangladesh’s export revenue from shipments of finished leather, footwear and leathergoods fell by 17.5% compared to the same months in 2017, reaching $267.9 million. The figures come from the country’s Export Promotion Bureau.

Revenues for finished leather exports declined by 11.4%, reaching $41.2 million. The decline for leathergoods was even sharper, falling by 54% to $51.2 million over the three-month period. On a more positive note, leather footwear exports increased in value, by 5.6% to reach $175.5 million.

The Bangladeshi government has set the leather industry an export target of more than $1.1 billion for this financial year (July 2018 – June, 2019), which denotes expected growth of 3.5%.
