Tuscany: young tanners’ group member defends leather

Marta Lupi, a member of the family that runs leather manufacturer BCN and an active member of a young tanners’ group established by the local leather industry association in Santa Croce sull’Arno in Tuscany, is on the warpath against synthetic materials that misuse leather’s name.

After asking her recently about the environmental claims of the manufacturers of the synthetic substitutes, Milan-based business daily Il Sole 24 Ore said Ms Lupi’s answers might have come from “a member of the old guard”. It seemed surprised that someone from the millenial generation that big brands are so keen to attract and cling onto could hold such opinions.

She said: “Any time I hear people talking about sustainability, I tell them right away that, of course, sustainability has to be a priority for everyone: citizens, companies and institutions. But when I hear people singing the praises of these so-called eco-materials, I am quick to ask them some questions. Are they sure these materials are more sustainable than leather? Are they sure the chemical companies that produce those materials have a lower carbon footprint than leather manufacturers? I ask them to think about the greater use of water and energy that those materials require and about their non-biodegradability, in the majority of cases.”
