ISA TanTec calls for reduction in water use

The executive chairman of tanning group ISA TanTec, Thomas Schneider, has said leather manufacturers must reduce the volumes of water they use in their processes.

Speaking at the time of the All China Leather Exhibition in Shanghai at the end of August, Mr Schneider said tanners should stop viewing investments in improved environmental management as cost centres and start to regard them as profit centres.

He explained that when, in 2003, ISA TanTec launched the LITE concept for its leather, it was intended as a tool for internal use to measure reductions in water and energy use. It has this name because the focus is on using technologies and processes that have a low impact on the environment.

In time, ISA TanTec realised it was able to offer precise data for each of the articles in its range and, as a result, help its customers make choices based on environmental impact if they wanted to. Its work in developing the LITE concept, therefore, became a means of attracting and keeping customers.

On the question of water, Mr Schneider said it makes little sense for tanners to spend money consuming large volumes of water and then spend more money treating large volumes of wastewater. “We should reduce the usage of water,” he said.
