COTANCE urges Helsinki Fashion Week to reverse leather ban
30/08/2018
COTANCE said it deeply regretted the decision and called on the organisers to change their minds. It said Helsinki Fashion Week founder, Evelyn Mora, had based her decision to ban leather on “false assumptions” and on a distorted view of “the world’s oldest recycling industry”. Ms Mora said on making her announcement that she wanted to take “an active stand against cruelty to animals and the damaging environmental impacts that the use of animal leather brings with it”.
In its response, COTANCE described leather as “the first and most valuable example of a circular economy”. It said Ms Mora’s decision for Helsinki Fashion Week was “a profound mistake” and pointed out that she herself has alerted the public to “the questionable ethics and dangers” of many vegan alternative materials. As most of these alternatives are fossil fuel-based, they have a share of the responsibility for the pollution of the oceans, as well as for the pollution generated during their production.
